Dear Baby Boy,
Yesterday marked our 20-week milestone -- halfway through this pregnancy! Woohoo! I'm so excited, because I just can't wait to meet you.
Your Dad thought up what I think is the perfect name for you! We won't share it with anyone until we've seen you in person and let you try it on. But I really think its going to fit you perfectly. I wanted you to have a name that sounds nice and has a special meaning (and that can't easily be converted into a schoolyard taunt). And I think we've got that exactly! In fact, you've probably heard us calling you by that name lately, whenever we talk to you. I hope it feels right to you, too. (By the way, the low voice that sometimes sounds like its been turned up real loud? That's your Daddy. I told him he doesn't have to speak right up against the belly, but he likes to do it that way.)
There are so many exciting things happening now. The most exciting thing is that I've been able to feel you moving! Someone told me that I would recognize your movements because they would feel utterly foreign, and she was right. The feeling of your legs kicking or your hands exploring the inside of the womb is unlike anything I've felt before. Its your special mark, and I couldn't mistake you for anything else. Sometimes the feeling is similar to a tickle, sometimes like a poke, sometimes a rolling. My bet is: you are gonna be one active kid.
We've also started preparing your room for you! I drew pictures of the space and moved imaginary furniture around on the paper. Daddy helped me measure everything and figure out that I won't be able to put half the stuff in there that I first imagined! (You'll find this is a common theme with us.) I've been having so much fun imagining where we'll be sitting together when we nurse late at night and where I'll put the nightlight so I can check on you while you sleep. I've made sure that you have a nice, soft rug to play on (you know, once you learn how to sit up and all that), and that your changing table is by the big window, so you can watch the birds and the trees and the sky while we take care of business. We'll probably move out of this house before you have a chance to develop really strong memories of this room, but just know that the first bedroom you ever had was one of the most fun projects of my life.
The other big thing going on is that everybody is coming to town to fete you! Your grandma is hosting a baby shower, and all your aunties and uncles and grandparents and mommy and daddy's friends are coming here to fill our house with stuff for you. Everyone is so incredibly excited to meet you. I hope you can feel all that love all around you, for the rest of your life. You are one lucky kid, my son.
My son. Wow.
All my love,
Your Mama
